Online Business | Reasons for Failure

by Jayne Kopp on May 16, 2011

reasons for failure

There can be many reasons for failure when starting or trying to build an online business, but more often than not, if you whittle right down to the core failure reasons, they are usually as a result of two things:

1) Something you have done or 2) something you have not done.

As I’ve mentioned before, I talk to a number of people throughout each week who are looking for information on starting an online business.

So many people actually fail before they start! In other words they focus so much on the fear of failure that they end up doing nothing at all and never take action.

On the other hand, there are those who actually DO start… but after a few months, or even weeks…they quit!

Now, I’d like to be honest and tell you up front, that building an online business in not always a bed of roses! It takes effort, sometimes you have to do things that are not as enjoyable as others… and often it takes a little while to see results.

I know I have shared in the past that when I started, I saw a few results very quickly. It was great…for a while. Then when things simmered down I wondered what the heck was going on, and why I wasn’t knocking the ball out of the park as I thought I might. :-|

To be completely transparent, I occasionally go through similar phases today. There are weeks when I feel to work my backside off, yet, at the end of the week I look back and wonder “what the heck??” Particularly in light of the blood sweat and tears I feel to put into it.

Admittedly, there are times I’ve thought “oh to heck with it, this really is for the birds”, but then, thankfully, I’ve mustered up the common sense to give myself a quick & swift kick in the Khyber Pass and just keep on keeping on.

Inevitably, the Law of Compensation kicks in the next week… and things look a little brighter, however many a time; I do need to analyze my actions more carefully to determine what I might improve upon.

I almost always realize that I have spent more time on activities that do not produce the desired results, and have to determine what I might focus on instead.

Now, with this said, if you are in the category of those who would love to start an online business, you, like many of the people I have spoken to, may have been ‘thinking’ about it for quite some time now.

Though this can feel like work… it isn’t! In other words, thinking about something will not make it happen. (Sadly ;-) )

I spoke to a fellow last week who advised me he has been “thinking” about starting an online business for “quite sometime”. I could tell by his tone that he was frustrated.

I asked him “why” he sounded agitated. His response was that he had put so much research into getting started that he no longer knew how to and felt thoroughly confused! :-(

This falls into the ‘over thinking vs. due diligence’ category, and while I completely understand how confusing getting started might sound… the fact of the matter is… it isn’t!

I feel that common sense has to prevail, in that if he had simply taken action a couple of years ago, his chances of success would, without a doubt, been much higher than they are by simply doing nothing.

Based on the above mentality however, I couldn’t help but wonder if he might have been one of those individuals who started … then quit shortly thereafter. (I guess we’ll never know).

I also have spoken to those who ‘have’ started and quit in the past, but have come back to revisit the possibilities a second time around.

When I ask these individuals ‘what’ they did before in the way of working their business, often, they did very little other than perhaps sign up for an opportunity, place one or two ads, but nothing more.

Their reasons for failure are quite self explanatory and are as a result of something they did NOT do. (keep going!)

I do understand that it’s also easy sometimes to get side tracked, or become so consumed by thought, that action doesn’t kick in. Of course ‘expectations’ can get in the way as well, but when it comes down to brass tacks, often failure reasons are indeed a result of what we have not done, opposed to what we have done.

How do you feel about your daily activities?

Do you spend your time working on marketing and customer generation, or do you often get caught up in tweaking things such as the aesthetics of your website?

I understand there are many tasks that are absolutely necessary… but do they over ride the more important result producing activities?

I guess my point is we all fail sometimes, but to be quite honest we should focus on these hiccups as opportunity for improvement rather than throwing in the towel and leaving it at that.

If you’re stuck in a rut right now and feel to be going nowhere fast, ask yourself the following questions:

Am I taking action?

Are my actions producing results?

What could I be doing instead?

What could I be doing in conjunction with my current activities to improve my results?

I have found that once I become very clear on my goals and desired end result, tweak my focus and adjust my activities, i.e.: spend more time on marketing projects, I see notable improvements very quickly.

Let’s, face it, if you keep doing what you always do, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always gotten.

Could it be possible that your ‘less than earth-shattering’ results might be due to something you are NOT doing opposed to what you are?

Could you share what some of your reasons for failure might be? I’d love to hear your discoveries and suggestions!

Hi Jane,

Thanks for posting this article. I really enjoy reading this.
You’re right Jane. All people in the world made a mistake every now and then. This will happen because many of us focus on the other instead focusing in our task. By making a failure, we also learn on how to make it right for the next time.

Procrastination, information overload and paralysis by over analysis.

I think that the main reason for which an online entrepreneur fails in business is that he/she selects the wrong strategy and changes nothing. It is very important to choose the right way to success from the very beginning and go ahead! If something goes wrong it is important to take action immediately.

Hi Terje, yes I believe that your thoughts are accurate. We do need to be focused on our actions and if they need altering, we must do so. It makes little sense to continue doing the wrong thing with no results. Nothing changes in that case.

Lovely to see you,

Hey Jayne,

Thanks for such a great article as always. You’re right, it’s advisable to do your own diligence before getting started but it can only get you so far.

There are things that you need to actually do before you can understand how they work – you know what I mean? And if you prolong your research, you might never get started in the end.

When I got started, I spent too much time on making everything look wow. I wanted everything to be perfect. Now, my priority is income-producing activities. I outsource any other mundane tasks.

Thanks for sharing your insights, Jayne.

All the best,

Mavis, I totally get it. Nothing replaces experience. I tend to phaff around sometimes as well, but nipping in the bud much better. The thing is though, one has to ‘start’ …. there are always things to learn… we will spend our whole life learning, so might as well implement starting with one thing at a time.

I am determined to take a leaf out of your book. 9 months of grinding has propelled you to awesome limits. I knew you were a firecracker when I met you!

Hi Jayne,

When I first started my online business I found myself falling into “Information Overload.” Trying to learn everything I could and never taking action, as I should’ve.

I started fixing it by, removing myself from many email lists and only staying on those which offered the most value. This helped me save probably 2 hours/day.

So I put those 2 hours toward money making activities, instead of just reading emails. It has helped me tremendously.

I guess my advice would be to, look at how you spend your time, cut out the activities that aren’t directly related to making you money and replace those with money making activities.

You will be amazed at how much more you achieve when you stop and take a look at how you spend your time, eliminate your bad habits and create some new good habits.

Thanks for sharing Jayne and have a great day!

Hi Jane,

I believe in the law of compensation. Everything you put out into the Universe comes right back to you. As this relates to business we have to think about our next steps carefully before we taking action.

Hi Tisha, I too believe in the law of compensation. I actually wrote a couple of posts before on this, my first one was a guest post for Susanna Hess. Once the pipeline has been filled with work, all the rewards start coming out the other end! Glad you relate to that!

See you soon.

Hi Jayne,

I love the way you distilled the reasons for not succeeding yet to 1) Something you have done or 2) something you have not done. That pretty much is all one needs to know and based on that analyse which of the two is mainly responsible.

If it’s because of something we have done then it’s a matter of tweaking things and moving on. Worse is the fact of doing nothing and expecting results. How insane is that?

I do believe that starting and becoming successful at anything is all about the personal journey it causes us to have to take.

When I started out my focus was on becoming successful at business but as I realized what it was really about for me I changed my focus to that of becoming a better me and the business success was secondary but of course it follows as a result of achieving this anyway.

Hi Marcus, thanks for stopping to comment. Always nice to see you.

I am glad you saw the simplicity of my message.

I actually started this particular journey for both reasons, and that’s why I chose the path I am on. They are both important to me, but I do have to admit that I didn’t ‘really’ realize the importance of ‘personal growth’ as much as I do now.

I think that regardless of the business you run, ‘personal development’ has to come into play first and foremost. I know you know that as well… as it is so essential to improve your inside in order to improve your outside.

As you say, it is a journey indeed. I am so thankful for it in so many ways, particularly the part that has allowed me to align myself with people like you with whom I am on the same page.

Thanks so much Marcus for your awesome comment.

Hi Jayne!

I could actually relate to that “agitated fellow” you were talking about. Sometimes, we have the tendency to over-analyze and over-think things too much that we end up too muddled and frustrated we can’t get our hands on anything anymore. We eventually end up frustrated, confused, and still thinking too much.

In crimes, thinking about killing someone is not yet punishable by law. The courts or the law enforcers cannot really delve into the mental realm to convict someone of a crime, can they? But the moment they make overt acts, that is, really kill someone, then the wheels of justice now takes its course and that action is now punishable.

I know it’s quite a gory, if not misplaced, analogy but my point is: overt acts, and not just thinking about something, will get the job done.

Hi Elmar, I am laughing out loud!! (really) picture me sat here with a huge grin :-)

OK, perhaps the analogy was ‘a bit over the top’… but it reminds me of wanting to kill my husband for putting ‘sugar’ in the gravy last night instead of flour (go figure… how do you DO THAT??)… after I had cooked a beautiful Prime Rib for HIS mother and her husband…and describes what I wanted to do. Thankfully not punishable by law! (at least I’m over it now)

On a more serious note… I agree that it’s frustrating now knowing what to do… it is quite difficult to break free and make a start.

Are you a Green personality by any chance? I am, Oliver is… we over think things too. It’s a matter of self discipline to push outside of the comfort zone. It does take energy, but once you realize it, you are half there. Would you agree?

Lovely to see your smiling face Elmar!

Hi Jayne,
Thanks for this great article, I enjoyed reading it. I think that research can only get us so far. We really need to get out there and actually do something before we are able to fully understand what we are researching. There is the “doing” knowledge that we can never get by reading and researching alone.

Great post, Jayne! I think that what has happened to me a lot of the time is trying to do something in the hopes that it will work, instead of focusing on fundamental tasks. I think that another thing that we miss sometimes when we start after the atypical success stories and the uplines saying, “Why haven’t you done that?” is that there is a tendency to think that things just aren’t working with the company.

I know that I’ve been with companies where I knew it was time to quit, and I held on too long in the hopes that it might just turn around, but I think that there are times when we have to realize that we have to have confidence in what we’re trying to build. I also think that one of the key things is, if you know you are having difficulty, figuring out where. I know after a lot of searching that my biggest difficulty is closing, so it is just a matter of getting the skills to get better at it. Once you figure out where the problem is, that makes it a lot easier to solve.

Hey Jayne,

Excellent insights. These are all causes of failure in online businesses.

Online business is not a bed of roses like you pointed out and those who stick to it while learning the way things work will eventually reap the fruits of their labour.

Sometimes I sit back and reflect on what would have happened if I had waited till I knew everything, if I can know everything, before I get started online. I would not have started.

I knew NOTHING when I got started but I stayed at it and learnt on the job.

It is essential that we dont overthink things!

Thanks Jayne!

Hi Jayne,

Awesome Post and totally agree with you. Focusing on things that doesn’t work is one of the most common reason for failure.

In the earlier days of my blogging i spent countless hours on designing graphics, banners but never got successful. Now i simply go at DigitalPoint Forums and outsource all my design stuff.

Anyways, Thanks for sharing this great post.

The thing is, if we have countless hours, it’s ok, but the truth is we don’t! My time is worth money… and to spend it on things I do not do well is silly.

I haven’t seen Digital Point, but I am only just looking into outsourcing as of late.

As an online entrepreneur, I also would like to express my opinion on failure in business. The point is that almost all people, who are engaged in business experience certain difficulties. Err is human. When failing attempts to start business many people get into despair and continue to work for somebody. Only strong people analise their mistakes, make correct conclusions and try to start from the very beginning. Acting in such a way, it is possible to become a successful entrepreneur in the end.

Yes, to err certainly is human, I guess I must be one of you!! LOL… ie: the rest of the world, I’ve certainly bashed my head on the wall more than once.

I also agree that you do have to be strong to analyze mistakes and start from the beginning, even if it means baby steps.

It is quite difficult to start a business when you are already working, I do appreciate that, but if you START… you are half way there.

Lovely to meet you

Hi Jayne! I think you’re right. Often we fail because of what we are *not* doing.

Sometimes, that’s because we are newbies and have no idea what to do. In that situation, having an experienced mentor is critical before trying again.

Other times, it’s because we just aren’t doing enough, for whatever reason. And if that’s the reason, we can always do more, so there’s never a reason to give up!

Jeanine, a mentor definitely helps … or a coach, accountability partner to lead the way… something usually helps.. or should I say someone.

I always thought as a newbie, that if others can learn, I could too, I just had to find the people to show me… is it not amazing how much free help we get just by being part of a wonderful community?

There is never a reason to give up… as then you will have truly failed!

Hi Jayne,

The information overload phase is one that I’m starting to think we all have to go through. I did. You did. We have to learn the hard way. It’s funny but as much as I’ve tried “coaching it out” of people; they still sniff out every new shiny object released.

Then there are those who just don’t see any potential in anything other than job classifieds :) Those aren’t my people.

But like you mentioned, even the action takers can sometimes take one or two steps and stop. It’s great that they do more than most (get off the sofa) but you have to be persistent! Easier said than done.

I’m guilty of promoting and working on client work and lead gen before the tweaks and functionality of my own site are in place :)

Jon, I agree with the information overload thingy and I have been through it more than once for sure.

I no longer chase shiny objects, I utilize the things I have, I always knew it takes work, so have never been one to bite at things that promised instant results.

It is very easy to put the cart before the horse for sure. I do it still… so that’s why I have been a little MIA lately… just getting things in place.

burnout is something that is wearing me out right now, not just business but busy-ness… kids, life, other commitments, it’s very easy to let things slide, but as you say, being persistent and consistent is key.

lovely to see you

Do you know what this reminds me of Jayne? I’ve spoken with some of the people who are in the same training community that I’m in and they have personally sent me emails asking me questions. I told them I would help them if they needed. They have whined about not getting the results I’ve been getting. So I asked them what they had been doing and guess what their answers were? Not even a quarter of what I had done. Dah!!! Why? Ah they got distracted or they weren’t sure what to do or they had things to do around the house that really needed to get done. Excuses, excuses, excuses. You either treat this like a business or a hobby but you can’t have both.

Sorry, didn’t mean to get off on a tangent there but this post is what reminded me of these people. Anyway, I enjoyed your take on this because it does happen to everyone. We will all have our moments but it’s our choice to get over those and keep on going.

Thanks Jayne, enjoyed it!

Hi Jayne,

an enjoyable read every green personality should be able to relate to.

Bottom line is really that we did things that didn’t get us success and that we didn’t do things that would have gotten us if we had done them. Paralysis-analysis and perfectionism come into play.

Losers hang on to losing activities and winners hang on to winning activties, that’s my conclusion.

It can be a bit of a battle for ‘our color type’ sometimes because we have a focused way of thinking. Do you not feel it takes us effort to keep tabs on our tendencies?

I do, I am so glad I ‘know how I am” hence can keep myself in line and try mixing a few of the different colors in to tweak me on occasion. :-)

Thanks for your comment as always Oliver!
