Did you know procrastination has a price tag … particularly when starting a home based business?
Furthermore is could be costing you in more ways than one.
You see, this last week I’ve spent some time reviewing some of the ‘interviews’ I’ve had with people who have contacted me about getting started on a home bases business.
I found it amazing how many people confessed that they have ‘thought’ about starting a home based business for quite a while. In fact one fellow told me he has been ‘thinking’ about it “for a very long time” – his “long time” happens to be over 4 years!
There have been others who have told me they’ve been ‘looking’ for months, and some who said they considered getting started a few years ago, but put the idea on the back burner, and are now revisiting the possibilities.
Can you imagine how costly this might have been? Imagine what they ‘might’ have earned during this time if they had only stopped “thinking” and started doing!
Now, don’t get me wrong, I know we all procrastinate from time to time. I do it too. There are some things I just don’t know ‘how’ to do, and the thoughts of having to learn it are daunting.
For example, I’m not all that techy. Granted I have learned a lot these last few years, i.e.: erecting a few blogs, learning HTML, and many other things I never thought I’d ever do.
While I know I do have the ability to learn these other tasks, I don’t always know who to ask, sometimes I feel like I might be inconveniencing those who do if I ask, and other times it just seems like too much work, especially when there are other things to do that feel easier and more exciting. When it comes right down to it though, it’s all a poor excuse and I know it.
The problem is, we always pay a price for procrastination, even if it’s not pertaining to business.
We might procrastinate on tidying the house, or cleaning a closet. Sometimes these things just seem to take more energy than we ‘feel’ we want to exert, so we choose to do something easier or perhaps more attractive at the time.
The thing is whatever we choose NOT to do, loom over us like a dark cloud. We never become free of the thought… especially if its something that deep inside we know we should do… or it’s something we want to do.
We almost always find that once we get started on “dreaded” task, it’s not nearly as unpleasant as we think it will be and it often it moves quicker and more smoothly than we anticipate.
Furthermore, at the end of it or even if we’ve only chipped away at it, we usually feel awesome and wished we’d have started sooner!
This goes for starting a home based business. If we have no experience, we never know ‘how” to start right off the bat and there always feels to be ‘so much’ to learn.
What you have to remember though, if this is your fear, is that nobody starts knowing it all, and we have to learn in steps in order to progress.
We always get better and improve along the way… so why not start now? In a month from now, you’ll be over the initial hurdle and getting better as each day passes!
I find a helpful motivator to consider when stalling on getting started, is to imagine what it might be costing you monetarily!
If its not bad enough that the fact you haven’t started might be niggling you, it can be almost scary to look back a few years later when so much time has passed and imagine where we could have been and what we ‘might’ have earned.
Even I ‘wish’ I had started much earlier… and while I didn’t have a problem with procrastination when it came to starting my business, I still wish I had the insight to know how fulfilling it can be and how much further ahead I might have been.
As I’ve mentioned, we all do it, and quite often, our reasons are similar. I find that people procrastinate due to the following:
Lack of knowledge, which brings on the fear of failure, which brings on the fear of possible effects on our self esteem … and often we worry about what others might think “if” we don’t succeed.
In order to calm these thoughts, I would like to suggest a few things:
If you really want to start an online business, you really need to address the reasons why… also known as your BIG WHY.
For me, it was to provide a wonderful life for my children and have the ability to stay at home and remain present in their growing years. To me, that is important enough to brush any uncertainty to the side and dive in head long!
Though your reasons might be different than mine, I’m guessing that they are equally as important to you.
The second step is to calm your inner critic and abolish all limiting beliefs. You simply must realize that nobody has instant knowledge, and if others can succeed, so can you. It really is a matter of working on your mindset and building your self esteem.
Worrying about what others think should never be a factor. This is about you and nobody else.
Third, realize there are people who are more than willing to help you (I’m one of them!). I find working online is a wonderful way to meet people, and you would be amazed at the generosity and assistance that is available to you. Even at this stage of the game, I still have to remind myself of this, and reach out occasionally and ask for help with some things
Fourth, Ask yourself “what harm could there possibly be in starting a home based business?” I am sure you will realize there is no harm at all; in fact I am sure you will find there are so many positives and life enhancing opportunities instead.
Fifth, alleviate overwhelm and recognize that although you have to learn a few skills, you will learn much faster once you start. Remind yourself you do not have to learn everything instantaneously. Simply make a list and start to tackle one small step at a time.
Once you start to put one foot I front of the other, you will find that you will be crossing the hurdles off your list a lot faster than if you remain stagnant. Even baby steps give you a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and dissipate that feeling of ‘stress’ almost immediately.
Once the ball is rolling, it will start to pick up speed. You will then find you might be kicking yourself wondering why allowed yourself to be stuck in a rut and why you didn’t do it sooner.
I know procrastination is human nature, but the only way to move forward is to kick it to the curb.
For all you know, you may have missed out of thousands of dollars that you ‘could’ have been earning if you had only turned your thoughts to action.
There really is no time like the present to start a home based business and these days even ‘lack of money’ can’t be used as an excuse either. There are so many low cost business ideas for shoestring budgets, that can at get you off to the races with minute capital outlay.
If you need some help or suggestions to move you forward and end procrastination NOW… contact me at any time and let’s get you on your way to an exciting new beginning.
I would also love to hear your comments on how procrastination affects you, and what price you feel you might have paid in the past. I’d also be interested to learn how you tackle it today, or how you managed to break free to make some positive life changes.

Jayne,
I guess the biggest price I have paid when it comes to procrastination is, that I have missed many opportunities … If I had applied all the knowledge that I have learned through online training, I would be working at home full time already
I have realized that to get started, you need to have a motivation strong enough. It could be for example escaping your 9-5 and you are willing to work hard to move away from your day job to your own online business.
Timo
HI Timo, I strongly believe that sometimes we all struggle with the same thing, particularly when ‘getting going’. I think that sometimes we are just tired too, especially when working full time. We come home and sit before our computers learning like crazy people, then still need more time and more energy to pour into our businesses. The worst part of it at first is the results “feel” intangible and in the back of our minds, we wonder…hmm, what results might this produce?
As you say though, we have to develop huge motivation, all tied to mindset. Eventually, based on my own experience, the Law of Compensation will kick in and our results will pour out the other end.
It’s a tough go at first… but eventually we get there.
I think being aware of the ‘wasted time’ helps a lot. As you say, if we all cracked in immediately we would see results much sooner than by doing nothing more than learning.
Keep going my friend, you will be home soon!
Jayne
Thank you for the encouragement
You’re welcome!
I think I sense where you might be at… and I will be writing a post very soon to address some of the things we allow ourselves to do… unknowingly that really take a huge bite out of our time.
I also have another post I’m working on… a huge realization I had the other day while spending some time ‘thinking’. Its all about tweaking directions occasionally…. something I am doing very soon but will be asking for input from some of my readers.
It’s interesting actually, but sometimes we feel worn out or at least as if we spin our wheels when a tiny tweak comes to mind that just might have the power to dramatically change our direction.
I’ll have to keep you on a cliff hanger for a day or two Timo
… but sometimes we just need to ‘bungy jump’… LOL… and I’m just trying to find the words to explain it.
till then…enjoy your day…(my night)

Hi Jayne,
Ok I am a procrastinator but I eventually get it done LOL. To help me overcome procrastination, I need to break my tasks down to smaller tasks. I think I procrastinate because I feel the task at hand is overwhelming.
Not related to business but for example, spring cleaning was a huge task for me. Instead of doing all at one go, I decided to spend an hour a day to clear the wardrobes. Once I got started I would actually see that it is not so overwhelming at all. It’s the getting started part that’s tough and when the momentum gets going, it’s easier.
So there you have it from a procrastinator who does her best to still get things done

HI Diana, I am so sorry for missing your comment. It happens sometimes…
the odd one sneaks under my nose. I logged onto my comments for this post and saw your smiling face. So sorry for not responding sooner.
I can procrastinate too, and as you say, I do eventually get it done. Often I wonder why I just didn’t crack in sooner as the relief feels so good to tick things off the never ending list.
As you say, it rarely is as overwhelming as we sometimes think it might be.
Keep up the good work fellow procrastinator and keep going!!

Excellent info about Procrastination. Distraction is my biggest challenge. If i don’t set a schedule for myself then i can waste hours playing pligg codes.
Oh jayne, HTML is one of the easiest thing and something that i learned in very short period of time.
Anyways, Thanks for sharing this great post.

HI Dev, I am easily distracted too. I really have to work on it. I have so many distractions, what with my children, backlog of other things going on. Its a wonder I get anything done.
I have no idea what Pligg codes, is… thank goodness!
It comes as no surprise to me Dev, that you were born with HTML already understood!
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Jayne,
When we start to procrastinate, we are forced to keep on procrastinating, coz stuff piles up and everything has its deadline. But we only do have 24 hrs, that’s not gonna change.
With a home based business procrastination is an extra challenge coz the comfort zone is in reach; and it is literally everywhere around you. You can simply be tempted to prolong your coffee time on the couch until the crisps are done and then you turn on the TV and you prolong your coffee time further until the movie is done.
Well, I don’t mean that every home based business person is doing this, but there is a great chance and there are lots of temptations.
I price tag my time and tell to myself about its worth every time I postpone something.
Cheers,
Jane.

HI Jane, next time I think about you, I’ll think about you on the couch with a bag of chips watching a movie with a steaming cup of coffee beside you. ha ha..
Joking.
I am the same, My time is very valuable. It has a huge price tag. Time that cannot be gained back is a biggy for me. I like to try to make every minute count.
thanks Jane. I loved your response. You are so right.
Well, I’m off to get a coffee!
See you soon
Jayne
Jayne,
It’s interesting that you wrote this now because I was just thinking the same thing. During a podcast interview I was listening to on another site, one of those standard questions came up along the lines of, “what would you have done differently?”
The experienced marketer admitted they would have implemented a certain strategy sooner and would have quit their job earlier. But then again, hindsight is always 20/20.
Thanks for the motivation here
HI Jon, you are right, hindsight is 20/20 however… I think the fact that the sooner we get started the sooner we see results is a great thing to keep in mind. Maybe it comes with age… I dunno, but I always think that. Even when I had my kids and had a few lbs. to lose, I thought, “OK self… get your butt on that treadmill… you’ll be done by X” sure enough, it was not nearly as horrible as I thought…and I was at my goal much sooner.
Same with business, the sooner you start, the sooner you reach your goal. Even if it takes a while… you have to look at the fact that it would have taken much longer.
I like to put a price to it, simply because, there is a good chance procrastination does ‘cost’ monetarily too. A person may have made 50K per year during all the years they never lifted a finger. I suppose it’s all to try for… but I think you get my point.
Thanks for the comment.
Jayne
Hi Jayne! Sometimes I think Procrastination is one of my names, stuck in there somewhere between impatience and night owl
.
But what you said here that really struck me was this…
“We almost always find that once we get started on ‘dreaded’ task, it’s not nearly as unpleasant as we think it will be and it often it moves quicker and more smoothly than we anticipate.”
This always turns out to be true for me! So I agree with you that for people considering starting a home-based business, but putting it off, they need to just start and they will find they will be glad they did. Time wasted is money lost.

HI Jeanine, thanks for your comment. isn’t it the truth how things are never as difficult as we feel they might be… once we start!
I know all about the ‘night owl’ thing. I am trying to improve on that! ha ha. It’s difficult… I tend to procrastinate on getting to bed!
Talk soon

Hi Jayne,
Great article and right to the point…“FEAR.” I believe fear is the #1 reason that causes most people to procrastinate in every area of their lives. Fear of rejection…Fear of success…Fear of what others may think…Fear failure… What we must all realize is that with all new things, there will be challenges; and these challenges are part for the course of growth…helping us learn and sharpen our skills so that we can become an expert in our endeavors. Fear is also deeply rooted in the ego and the ego is needy and is constantly seeking external acceptance. When this occurs with me, I invite my ego to have a sit down, over herbal tea, and I gracefully tell “it” (my ego) to take a permanent hike! LOL!
Life is short, so make it great! Don’t let the internal resistant of your ego take you off your mark. Be willing to take a risk and invest in yourself by taking action on your dreams. After all, your current mindset is what got you where you are today. Don’t be afraid to ask yourself… “What new thought process do I need to cultivate in order to propel me to the next phase of my life?”

Hi Jane,
Ah yes don’t we all know how to procrastinate? The problem arises when this becomes a chronic condition as it then road blocks us.
I deal with my procrastination by getting tough with myself. For instance I won’t accept “I don’t feel like it” as an excuse for not doing anything.
I always tell myself that if I can come up with a ‘legitimate excuse’ (yes I know how pathetic… LOL) apart from “I don’t feel like it” then I might allow myself not to do it.
What this does is force me to be honest with myself and these days I am quite good with admitting that I don’t want to do something because of a fear of some kind.
So when I have that our on the table, my next question to myself is, “Right what does this fear look like? What is the very worst thing that can happen here?” The moment I shine a light on this, it no longer scares me and so my “legitimate excuse” is redundant and before I know it I’m just doing it.
Sounds like a long way to get there but it works as long as I can catch myself in time.
Awesome post as usual Jayne!

Hi Jane,
This is an excellent post! Procrastination used to be a major issue in my life, but I’ve learned to tame it (mostly!). I still have my moments, though, just like everyone else.
Two points I would like to make. First, you are so right about their being a cost to procrastinating. One is money (as you said). For me, the other is TIME… as in time spent worrying about it and obsessing about how I SHOULD be doing it! Its also a cost of ENERGY.
Second point — I think we each need to dig deep down and try to pinpoint WHY we are procrastinating. For me, it’s mostly when I feel overwhelmed, as you discussed. Overwhelm — not knowing what to do first and not having a solid plan of attack — will stop me from moving forward every time. So I know I need to break things down into smaller chunks, or get some advice from someone who’s done this kind of thing.
We each have our own procrastination triggers — overwhelm, fear of failure, fear of the unknown, etc. If you can figure out what is triggering your procrastination, you’ve taken one very critical step to overcoming it.
Thanks for the excellent piece, Jayne. Love the way you write!!
HI Bob, thanks for your awesome contribution as usual. YOu are right, we all have different triggers. sometimes it’s lack of glamour too for me. If something seems mundane, I would rather bury myself in something more exciting… you know… with more sparkle too!
We are funny little creatures but it seems that most people in this industry recognize their shortfalls. Its those who have not entered yet that really need to read posts to boost their strength!
Thanks Bob
Jayne
You really hit the nail on the head, Jayne. I’ve been procrastinating on making an investment that will allow my business to go to the next level. A few days ago I realized that I was just putting it off (instead of actually waiting for some legitimate reason) and I started to think of my goals and where I wanted to take my business in the next year or two. It became clear that I’d have to take this step sooner or later and that the sooner I took it, the faster my business would grow. So, my choices were not, do or die (fear of failure) but do now and succeed sooner or do later and succeed down the road. That shifted my perspective and now I’m taking action.
This post came at just the right time. I feel even better about my situation now.
Hugs,
Melody

good luck… Cant wait to see your transformation!!
Jayne
Agree with you Jayne that procrastination is something we should all avoid.
However when it comes to people setting up home based businesses, I believe the reason for procrastinating is simply because many times they have no idea how to run a business and are hence scared. It’s understandable, isn’t it?
Catarina, yes, it is very understandable that people are a little afraid, but it’s something we all have to get past.
having to learn things you have never done before is a little tricky but it does get easier doesn’t it?
lovely to see you
Jayne
Hi Jayne!
Oh, I do procrastinate often than I thought! I mean, with all the things we are all juggling, trying to fill in different roles all at the same time, the tendency is to set aside some of the work stuff. Before you know it, what you think were menial work tasks that could’ve been done in an hour has multiplied and you now have work backlog that won’t fit in a day! Then, you start to grumble. And your entire day is ruined!
Which is why, I know better now by making up a list of things to do. And sometimes I have to keep reminding myself that I need not finish everything in one day. I have to be realistic that sometimes things really don’t go according to plan. The point is, at least I’ve started doing.
Thanks for this “kicking” article. I was almost too lazy to work today! hahaha
Have a great week ahead, Jayne!

Hi Elmar, oh brother, how I know the menial tasks often add up and we feel put off. I really think the secret is having a list and just moving forward regardless of how overwhelmed we feel.
I am glad I was able to give you a kick to get started! LOL… that list would not get any shorter as you know if you don’t buckle down my boy!
Lovely to see you as always. I’ll be over to visit soon.
Jayne
I’m glad I started when I did but I had all those same reasons. But, I did it anyway. I just wish that I would have had more knowledge in the beginning and knew who to ask and what. But like anything else in life, it’s all a learning experience right! We just need to get started, you’ll never know it all.
Great reasons why to just start Jayne and now people know there is someone to ask if they need any assistance.
Enjoyed this post and thanks…

That’s the thing isn’t it Adrienne, we all wish we knew more, but it’s a catch 22. Unless we start, often we can’t know more. It’s an experience thing. The sooner you start, the sooner you get going.
I suppose the one thing I did realize is how helpful people are in the online world, opposed to the offline world. That in itself is a huge difference.
Thanks for popping in on me Adrienne. I will be over to yours soon.

Great article Jayne! Procrastination is, as you stated, just human nature and we have so many distractions now. I find that is my biggest challenge now days. I have so many good intentions each day and I really have to set a schedule for myself to stay on track. People waste hours on Facebook “working” when in fact they aren’t doing anything really productive. Anyone starting a new business for the first time will have to adjust to a new schedule and new demands and the quicker they can adjust the more successful (and SANE) they will be! Thanks for sharing your insight as always Jayne!
April
HI April, thanks for your comment. Setting a schedule is huge, it really keeps you moving. For me, with a list or schedule, no matter what is next on the list, I just do it. It seems to keep the momentum.
Yes, as moms, we always have distractions don’t we. I am feeling it a little easier since both kids are in school full time, but that will be coming to an end soon… summer is just around the corner which will mean I have to be really strict with myself.
fingers crossed!
